Isn’t our data already backed up because we use Microsoft 365 and the cloud?

This is one of the most common and dangerous assumptions.

Microsoft 365 protects the availability of its platform, not your data decisions. If a file is deleted, overwritten, encrypted by ransomware, or removed by a compromised account, that change is often synced instantly across the environment. Retention policies and recycle bins help, but they are limited in scope and time.

Once retention windows expire, data is gone.
